Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin is a Ghanaian politician who now serves as the Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament. He served as Ghana’s Minister of Health from January 2012 until February 2013, when Hanny-Sherry Ayittey took over.


Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin was born on 24 September 1957. He is currently 65 years old.

Alban Bagbin Early Life

On September 24, 1957, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin was born to peasant farmers Mr. Sansunni Bagbin and Mrs. Margaret B. Bagbin. The thirteenth member of the Bagbin family, Mr. Bagbin is the fourth of Margaret Bagbin’s nine children.

The well-known politician is a native of Sombo, Nadowli West in Ghana’s Upper West.

Alban Bagbin Career

From 1980 to 1982, Bagbin served as the Bureau of Statistics and Statistical Service’s temporary Secretary to the Statistical Service Board. Between 1982 to 1983, he served as personnel manager for the former State Hotels Corporation, which included the Ambassador and Continental Hotels. After that time, he moved to Libya to start teaching English at the Suk Juma Secondary School in Tripoli.

Bagbin is the current Speaker of Ghana’s Fourth Republic’s 8th Parliament. He was sworn in on January 7, 2021, following a lengthy campaign in which he was nominated by Ghanaian Members of Parliament on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress. Bagbin beat the incumbent, Mike Oquaye, who was nominated for the seat by the New Patriotic Party.

Alban Bagbin Education

Mr. Bagbini attended Wa Secondary School and Tamale Secondary School for his senior high school studies. In 1980, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law and English from the University of Ghana.

He then attended the Ghana School of Law in Makola, Accra, and was admitted to the bar in 1982. Bagbin also graduated with honors from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, where he obtained an Executive Masters in Governance and Leadership (GIMPA).
