According to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, the Gh1 and Ghc2 note will cease to be in the system very soon.
The decision was taken due to the inability of the paper note to withstand wear and tear.
According to the Governor, handling of the paper note has become very difficult because they are usually not in good shape.
In alignment to this, the two paper notes will be replaced with coins. The new Ghc2 has a gold coating and a silver inner plate.
The new coin has the currency number written on its side which metamorphosis to a “star” sign as it is tossed.
